Della was recently interviewed for the widely publicized "Dance Teacher" magazine in an article discussing the collaboration between ballet accompanists and ballet instructors. She currently serves on staff at the Cincinnati Ballet as an accompanist for the professional company as well as the academy. Her skills of improvisation, noted by South Carolina Governor's School of the Arts Director, Virginia Uldrick, as well as her classical background, led her to the opportunity of her first ballet accompanying experience at the Governor's School for the Arts. Since then she has accompanied numerous ballet dancers, both professional and student, at places such as Interlochen Center for the Arts, College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, School for the Creative and Performing Arts, and the Cincinnati Ballet.

Music that most would immediately identify as New Age is not commonly reviewed in ARG. It is typically defined as relaxing and creating positive feelings, often associated with spirituality. I have most often found it rather boring and repetitive, with endless consonant or modal harmonies over a drone bass. As one who has performed at the piano with flute, violin, and cello on many occasions, I found this collection quite enjoyable, both for its musical substance and for the excellent performances given by Della and a group of Cincinnati Symphony musicians. While this is primarily a solo piano collection, there are enough pieces with the other instruments to be of interest to chamber music aficionados.

Della's music does not fit my New Age music definition very well, even though it is generally consonant and relaxing, and certainly spiritual. Her classical training is evident in the structuring of pieces that have form, often build to a satisfying big climax and then fall away graciously. There is clearly identifiable counterpoint, especially in the three pieces with other instruments. Her use of ostinato figures is limited and varied. The music can be enjoyed on its own terms, even without the spiritual descriptions supplied for each of the 11 pieces. Everyone who heard this music while I was listening, from my 13-year-old daughter to co-workers in my office to musical colleagues whose opinions I respect, made comments to the effect of "Hey, that's nice, what is it?"

I especially liked 'The Unveiling' with flute and violin-some truly beautiful music, even if it owes a little bit to the famous slow movement of Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony. I again found a few echoes of Rachmaninoff in 'The Longing' for piano and cello. Della enlists the considerable talents of cellist John Catchings, with whom one might imagine a very satisfying performance of the slow movement of the Russian's Cello Sonata. Della's music does not attempt quite the emotional or dynamic range of Rachmaninoff, but her writing and playing is consistently on a high and enjoyable level. In building my own programs for this kind of an ensemble, I have made a fair number of arrangements of music by others to

complement works originally written for various combinations of flute, violin, cello, and piano. I would, without hesitation, include one of these original works in a chamber music program and have actually inquired about the availability of scores from Della via her website (www.dellamusic.com). That is probably the best complement I can pay to her music and performances, which are well worth seeking out.
