A great reviw! Subscribe To My News (RSS)(Click this icon to Subscribe)

The title of Drew Davidsen's 2007 independently released solo debut This Journey has proven joyfully prophetic. Since releasing the fresh and dynamic, perfectly "in the pocket" set of 12 melodic and coolly grooving originals, the multi-talented composer/guitarist-a longtime session player who has appeared on close to 30 high profile projects--has enjoyed a unique career whirlwind, earning accolades across the board in the worlds of urban jazz and gospel and being named one of the "Ten Hottest New Guitarists" in Guitar Player Magazine's influential reader's poll. An institution at Delaware's Reheboth Beach Jazz Festival for the past eight years, Drew at the 2007 event was invited by jam session host Gerald Veasley to join a superstar contemporary jazz jam session featuring Eric Darius, Steve Oliver, Jason Miles, Bobby Lyle and Nick Colionne. In 2008, he won the Newsome Award for Best Gospel Jazz CD, was inducted into the Newsome Awards Hall of Fame and won the Momentum Award for Jazz Artist of the Year by IndieHeaven. This year, he's been nominated for two Momentum Awards, "Jazz Instrumental Artist" and "Jazz Artist of the Year.

Fans of Colionne and superstar urban jazz guitarist Norman Brown's blend of high energy melodic funk, crisp electric improvisations and laid back sensual soul will find an immediate emotional connection as they take This Journey. Davidsen kicks off the set with the colorful mid-tempo seduction of "Take it To The Maxx," then doubles his axe with the sax for the similarly sensual vibe of "Full Circle." He follows the instantly hummable, soaring and anthemic title track with the bubbly grooves and crisp melody lines of "Flip Side" before going retro, rolling his sharp melody over thumping old school beats on "Straight Up." Switching over the acoustic, Davidsen waxes dreamy and eloquent on the appropriately titled "Nylon Rain," then keeps the chill mode going with the passionate sax-guitar melody line and provocative electronic atmospheres of "Introspective." Those atmospheres blend with elegant piano, punchy sax coloring and crisp, laid back guitar and hypnotic, shuffling beats on "The Long Way Home."

"2 After 12" is perhaps the hippest track on This Journey, a delightfully bouncy, electronica-infused retro soul and blues jam that seduces and hypnotizes at the same time. The guitarist taps into an Irish music and inspirational vibe on the lovely, swaying "Vision Quest (Be Thou My Vision)," which he follows by the easy simmering, blues-jazz meditation of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing"-which adds panache and soul to a standard whose legacy includes renowned versions by Sting, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Not to toot his own horn, but Davidsen gets the title right on the closing track "Amazing," an extraordinary, most rousing, danceable jazz-funk twist on "Amazing Grace" that makes you glad God found you all over again!

While currently enjoying a re-release of This Journey-which is not only worth a second look, but is truly one of the most compelling indie urban jazz discs of the past few years--Davidsen also just released online a few preview tracks for this next project produced by Eric Copeland, Creative Soul Jazz: the high energy, feel good, top down, sun in your face travel tune "Astro" and the moody and contemplative, easy grooving, electronic-tinged "Bounce." For Davidsen, currently a resident of Towson, Maryland, the exciting journey continues!
