WITHOUT LOVE

If I speak with the tongues of angels and men
You'd not hear the words - they would die on the wind
Without Love

If I could move mountains and pull up the roots
I'd look down at my hands and say, "What's the use?"
Without love

You will find rudeness, boasting, and pride
And keeping a record of wrongs on the side
And you'll never lack for beams in your eyes
Without love

If I build my defenses, and straddle the walls
My world would collapse and the bulwarks would fall
Without love

The works of your hands you may bend, you may twist
But you'll lose your grip and go limp in the wrist
Without love

I can give all my money - get martyred in fire
It won't mean a thing - it would make me a liar
And please don't ask me to sing in a choir
Without love

When love is lost the stars cannot be held
And the branches of the tree will fight themselves
Without love

The mighty can't dance, nor the powerful sing
And you'll lose your path into God's endless spring
Without love

If I could speak with the tongues of angels and men
You'd not hear the words for the raging within -
The raging -
Without love

PAPER BOAT

If you're out sailing on the ocean
Crossing a river or a mote
You may find yourself in trouble
If you sail on a paper boat - can you float?

Up the ramp goes all your baggage
And anything that you can tote
They keep it safe down in the cargo
The warranty says it's gonna float

Open sky in all directions
Take off your many colored coat
The captain says he has connections
He would appreciate your vote

Blue sea flowing to the edge of the earth
They sent you pictures and a note
They said you should sail out there to it
In your little paper boat - can you float?

I have never seen a sparrow fall
And yet they're falling every day
I see them sitting on the statues
I see them flying away

I think you're living out your story
You know the words by rote
I don't wanna stand by and watch the ending
Send a flare from your paper boat
Can you float?

If you're out sailing on the ocean
Crossing a river or a mote
It may seem like the water's melting
You may have heard it in a quote

Out the window goes your baggage
And someone says "That's all she wrote"
I read about it in the paper - in the paper
People sailing on paper boats.

VERY LAST MITE

Something inside her - something so strong
Something past day and past night
Out of her poverty and the gold of her heart
She's giving one last mite

In all the years of the troubles and tears
She's never been able when push came to shove
But against all the logic and the needs of the moment
Caution is thrown to the wild winds of love
Something inside her something so strong
Something past day and past night

It's her very last mite - some thought it wrong
How could it be right?
But Jesus was warmed by the sight
Of her very last mite

3 years of roaming and searching each face
For a child w/ child-like hands
For just one who had come to the end of the race
And stalled in their own advance

Who knew all the pressures of food and of shelter
It's the losing of money that we're nervous of
But with nothing behind her and nothing before
It all disappeared into riches above
And caution was thrown to the wild winds of love
It's floating there still like a kite.

It's her very last mite - some thought it wrong
How could it be right?
But Jesus was warmed by the sight
Of her very last mite

Suddenly here was the one He had sought
To prove everyword He had spoken
This woman who drew Him out to center stage
To give up everything and be broken

Something inside her something so strong
That the coin was no longer held tight

It's her very last mite
Her fingers were loosened and her spirit took flight
It wasn't expected - it wasn't polite
To give the very last mite
Songs would be sung and the poets would write
How Jesus was warmed by the sight
Of her very last mite.

PRISONER OF HOPE

I cannot escape
I am bound with rope
No use squirming - no recourse
I'm a prisoner of hope

I try to crawl away
Some place where I can mope
But I get pulled back to the light
Right back into hope

Try to rescue me if you're able - if you dare
You might also try to make an anvil float
And there is no incantation you can use
On a prisoner of hope.

I lay things here and there
I misplace things a lot
But I'm glad there's one thing I can't lose
Cuz there's just one thing I've got

You think I'm not afraid
I'm quaking in my cloak
But despairing words you'll never hear
From a prisoner of hope.

Try to rescue me if you're able - if you dare
And you might as well ask dead men to vote
But it's useless to try and set this captive free -
This prisoner of hope.

Tragedy came near
And fear froze on my face
But hope stood calmly - never moved
Yet seemed so commonplace.

This world is not my home
And when life goes up in smoke
I'll still be a convict chained to love
A prisoner of hope.

You can try to rescue me if you're able - if you dare
You can try to tell the flowers not to grow
But when the jailer sets his mind to make you free
You're a prisoner of hope

No matter how far my hands may grope
My mind may careen down the slippery slope
I'm just a pilgrim under God's microscope -
A prisoner of hope.

ALL I CAN SEE

With the waves of this world around me
Perhaps it may seem a bit odd
In the dark abyss
Of a time like this
All I can see is God

With my feet carefully planted
So firmly on slippery sod
Every throw is a miss
In a time like this
But I'm reaching out for God
Cuz all I can see is God
All I can see
Is God

The people I meet say "Please tell us
Are you a rocker or a mod?"
But in time like this
I'd be remiss
If I wasn't looking at God

From ocean to ocean and farther
On every square foot that I've trod
In the vale of tears
Of my missing years
I've been reaching out for God
Cuz all I can see is God
All I can see
Is God

A daydream came to me
Can't say from where
I've gotta crawl out now
From under my chair
And fire off a flare
And stand in the glare
So all you can see is God
All you can see is God
All I can see
Is God

Don't try to creep past the minefield
Just call on the specialty squad
You'll have to stand still
Hey you know the drill
Keep reaching out for God

They want you to hide every wrinkle
Sneak around behind your facade
But days roll into nights
And they drop out of sight
And all you will have is God
All you will have is God
All I can see is God

When I look at the world
See the hand of God in all creation
It's all I can see
And when I look on the faces of the people
Made in the image of God
They're all I can see
All I can see..... all I can see

LOUSY FISHES

Sing a little song about every son and daughter -
Waitin' on the kingdom come
I'm sittin' in the river in 6 inches of water
But I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
Though it may tarry, brace for it
Every little secret's gonna have a face on it
Soon it's all been said and done.

The greatest dream I've had will fade away in a second
So I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
The clouds passing by
Will never know when I've been beckoned
So I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
Though it may tarry, speak to it
Be ready now and leap to it
Seemed like life had just begun.

Jesus said you serve him when you care for every little one
I'm pretty sure that's what I read
But all that I have got is just some lousy little fishes
And a loaf of week-old bread

Standing by to see my little fishes multiplying
Waitin' on the kingdom come
It's easy just to sit around and watch the world a'dying
While you're waiting for the kingdom come
While it may tarry, groan with it
Been so long since I got alone with it
Been so long since I've been stunned.

Sing a little song about every son and daughter
Waitin' on the kingdom come
My feet are tangled up and I'm straddling the border
But I'm waitin' on the kingdom come
Though it may tarry, brace for it
Clean your hands - make space for it
Hold them toward the setting sun
Hold them toward the setting sun

DUSTY ROAD

Dusty road came to my door
The way was long
My feet were sore
But you taught me what walkin's for
Dusty road, you taught me more.

Dusty road, I passed the time
Praying low to ease my mind
So many things I could not define
But the the breeze would blow
And ring my chime
You stretched as far as I could see,
Dusty road, for me,
Dusty road

I threw a rope around my dreams,
Pulled them in through the back door screen,
Scattered them across the kitchen floor,
Oh, but I now I find
I don't dream 'em anymore
I found the time
To sweep 'em back out the door.

Dusty road, let's count to ten
Take a deep breath, count back again
The sun is here - where has it been?
Dusty road, I know you can see
The rising glow you gave to me
I walked my life away for you,
Dusty road, for you
Dusty road -
Dusty road

I PICKED UP A STONE

I picked up a stone
I picked up a stone
I threw it as far as I could see
It was the same stone
Was the same stone
Someone on the road threw ahead to me
Someone on the road threw ahead to me

I called out a name
I called out a name
While groping my way like some refugee
It was the same name
Was the same name
Someone on the road had whispered to me
Someone on the road had whispered to me

My lips found a song
My lips found a song
The back of the wind was my harmony
It was the same song
Was the same song
The back of the wind taught me in a dream
The back of the wind taught me in a dream

I ran up a hill
I ran up a hill
The arc of the earth stretched out before me
It was the same hill
Was the same hill
It was the same air that Abraham breathed
It was the same air
It was the same song
It was the same name

So I picked up a stone
I picked up a stone
I threw it as far as I could see
It was the same stone
Was the same stone
Someone on the road threw ahead to me
Someone on the road threw ahead to me

DON'T GO SLEEPIN' IN THE BOAT

I gotta row this boat, Lord
Row it on the mighty sea
Waves up over my eyes, Lord
When you gonna see about me?

Don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
When you gonna see about me?
Don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
Hey now, people, stand amazed
What do you think I see?
There ain't nothin' movin' on the lake
But the Lord and me

If you won't meet me here, Lord
You got to meet me in the middle of the air
If the winds blow off my wings, Lord
You gotta meet me with another pair

But don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
Don't be an absentee
Wake up from your rest, Lord
Hey now, people, stand amazed
Makes me want to slap my knee
There ain't nothin' movin' on the lake
But the Lord and me

I gotta row this boat, Lord
But the waves are way too big
Clean up over my head, Lord
Feel like I'm in a whirly-gig

So don't go sleepin' in the boat, Lord
No time to count to three
Wake up from your rest, Lord
Hey now, people, stand amazed
I'm sure you will agree
There ain't nothin' movin'
Nothin' movin'
Nothin' movin' on the lake
But the Lord and me

Nothin movin' - nothin' at all
Nothin' movin' - don't have to take a fall
Nothin' movin'

IF EVER YOU FIND ME

If stars could fall
I'd catch them all and pray
That northern lights
Could turn the brightness gray

My eyes would not be blinded
And everything I touched I then could see
And you'll never have to say a word
If ever you find me

If stars could cry
I'd send the skies away
How could it know
That tears could show the way?

My arms would not be aching
And nothing that I held would ever flee
And you'll never have to hold me back
If ever you find me

If ever you find me
Behind the castle wall
Then you must remind me
Of everything
Or anything at all

If stars could dream
They would not seem to fade
You'd see no blur
But as they were first made

My sleep would not be broken
Unless I heard the waves upon the sea
And you'll never have to call my name
If ever you find me

THE END OF THE DREAM

Well, I got to the end of the dream last night
I got to the end of the dream
I never knew it was recurring
That's not ever the way that it seemed

I could never describe all the images
They fade at the edge of my sight
But I finally saw them all clearly
At the end of the dream last night
The end of the dream last night

Other times I was waking too early
And it left me just groping for air
And I yearned for the time when the outcome
Wouldn't melt in the dawn's early glare

The pilgrims were roaming the highway
And the plowman was steering his plow
I could tell by the faces turned toward me
That the end of the dream was now
The end of the dream was now

I silently sat on a hillside
And a breeze settled in
Though the ending seemed nearer
Than ever before
A voice said, "It only begins."

A ring on a finger stretched toward me
Was a match for the one that I wore
And a deepening glow fell around about me
Like a light from an opening door
A light from an opening door

I silently sat on a hillside
And the air seemed to grow
Though I found that my soul was surprised by the joy
A voice said, "It's ever been so"

Well I've thought back upon it for most of the day
And the air has grown larger it seems
I'd been numb from the chill of a wounded heart
And faith had been losing its gleam

But the doves were released from their cages
And the eyes of the blind touched the light
And the keeper of dreams would not let me awake
'Til the end of the dream last night
The end of the dream last night
'Twas the end of the dream last night
Last night

RESERVATION WITH THE TOMB (Sung by Lazarus)

It may be in September - could be in May
You rise up in the morning, never get through the day
You pass that particular day each year -
Thinking 'bout your future, maybe 'bout your career
You try to get those fig trees harvested
You know you better get it in gear
The grapes on the vine won't wait for you
If you want to be a profiteer
Get your mind on the margin, just like me
I had my olive oil jars labelled A to Z
And then one day they slid the rock over my new room
Come to find out, I had a reservation with the tomb.

We hang around this planet like grains of dirt
Many get deceived while trying not to get hurt
I know we were put here to worship the Lord
I could see Him from a distance, on another shore
And then I met this prophet/healer,
His words dove into my soul
He didn't run on like the teachers I'd heard
He was always in control
He said "mand cannot live by bread alone"
The lamp has been lit - and the seed and been sown
And just when I thought I'd see this national flower bloom
Come to find out I had a reservation with the tomb.

Yeah, 4 days - 4 days - Nobody could say I had swooned
4 days - give me more days up on Paradise Avenue.

Jesus had to call me just as loud as He could
I didn't want to come back because Heaven's so good
The light from the sun seems dimmer since then
I'm back from perfection to the pain of sin
My sisters threw a party just to celebrate
And I didn't want to seem unkind
Jesus seemed to know just how I felt
He seemed to know what I'd left behind
When in from the darknes - right through the door
My sister came in and she knelt to the floor
She bathed His feet with a bottle of expensive perfume.
some disciples jumped up and nearly kicked her out of the room
But Jesus said "She's the only one who seems to be in tune"
He said, "I been telling you people 'bout my seservation with the tomb
I said it over and over - I've got a reservation with the tomb."

STEEL AND CLAY (sung by Peter in Gethsemene)

I'm not getting all of this picture - there are things here that I just can't see
They've been at Him all week in the city like dogs, now again here in Gethsemene.
In His prayers tonight you could feel the dread
So Satan has asked to sift me like wheat
He won't catch me napping - I'm up on my feet

I said I would never deny Him - by night of by day
He called me His rock in a hurricane - I 'm not here to play
There's no time for delay
When you're steel and not clay.

I'm hot with God's own righteous anger - the sword's feeling good in my hand
And besides I've got something to prove tonight - I might never have such a good chance
They lay their hands on Him and I'm seeing red
I'll protect and defend Him w/ my very last breath
I'll prove my loyalty - fight until death

I said i would never deny Him - by night or by day
The cock can crow all it wants to crow - I'm in this to say
And while the rest run away
I'm made of steel and not clay.

Have I struck out in anger - or was it in fear?
But Jesus feels neither - His thoughts are all clear
Why is He touching that ear??

I'm not getting all of this picture - but I think that I'm starting to see
There used to be thousands that followed Him - Now it's just us and 1 absentee
So HE was the one that put a price on His head.
They're having their way - they've got their arrest
My sword now feels useless, but I've passed the test.

I said I would never deny Him - by night or by day
He won't take "No" for an answer - He's taken away
But i'm still in the fray
'Cause I'm steel and not clay.

LION AND LAMB (sung by Barrabas)

Depending upon the climate these days
Your name's either dirt or it's mud
So often I've sown the seeds of freedom
But I've always been nipped in the bud.
Now the only thing is to hold on to life
It's the only thing that you've got
There's always some ruler or potentate
Trying to keep you pushed down in your slot.

So throw the gate open - I'm out in the driving rain
But they'll remember my name
You can't just walk around healing the blind and the lame
If they ever ask who I am
Say I'm a lion - don't call me a lamb.

Well I've used up right much of my luck today
I guess it's best to lay low
This fellow they've found to take my place
Used to have this whole nation in tow
He preached on forgiveness and healed all their sick
And that's OK as far as it goes
But you won't find me turning my other cheek
There's no way that I'll pray for my foes.

He found out the hard way the Sannhedrin's playing for keeps
They sow and they reap
The only solution's to stand up and make a clean sweep
Evidently they like who I am
That's a lion - don't call me a lamb.

A sword is a man's only hope in this life
But our leaders have all given up
they're cutting their deals w/ the roman dogs
As they drink from the traitor's cup.

Well, how many centuries will come and will go?
How many storms will pass through?
The cities and villages all trodden down
And the ones who will fight it so few
The hearts of the people are ragged and worn
Like a garment that's tattered and old
The Gentiles are having their way w/ us
And time's rolling up like a scroll.

So throw the gate open - I'll step out across the threshold
If the truth be told,
I count this Jesus of Nazareth as one of the bold
But He just got himself in a jam
And while they may call me a lion -
I think they'll always call Him a lamb.

THAT MAN (sung by Pilate's wife to Pilate during the trial)

The multitudes in the neighborhood - hear them gathering in the night
Feel the darkness blotting out the sky - see the gaces in the firelight
And in a dream I have understood - we're in the crosshairs of their god
I just thought you might like to know
Where we're headed for down the road ...

With that man - have nothing to do with that man
Nothing to do with that righteous man
I had a dream where he touched my hand
Nothing to do with that man

I thought we lived in a backwards land - where the people seem to chaase their tales
But now they've got us in the balance - they've got their fingers on the scales
I know you rule with an iron hand - but this is something beyond your control
I had a dream that seemed to last a year
Please don't let it all evaporate here ..

For that man - have nothing to do with that man
Nothing to do with that righteous man
I had a dream where he touched my hand
Nothing to do with that man - No, No.

Have you made some kind of deal
It's gonna be revealed
You better turn back the time
To when your justice was real.

Nothing to do with that righteous man
Nothing to do with that man
Nothing to do with that man
Nothing to do w/ that righteous man
I had a dream where he touched my hand
I saw a desert in the driving rain
I saw a mountain and it was made plain
I saw a mad man perfectly sane
I saw Caesar screaming out in pain
I saw the devil in the holy land
By now i thought that you could understand
I think it's time that you washed your hands
Nothing to do with that man - Oh, no.

WHEN GOD BREAKS INTO THE WORLD (sung by the soldier at the cross)

When God breaks into the world
It seems like it would be at darkness at midday
With earthquakes ripping up the desert soil
From what I know of God
When God breaks into the world
He might send his Son to open up the graves
And send the spirits strolling 'round the streets
Would it be so odd?

So why is He a refugee so lifelessly
Hanging in the dark?

When God breaks into the world
I wonder what he'd do to one who's killed his Son?
I'm looking down and I see my hands
Wrapped around a spear.
I need to break out of this world
Now who's gonna save me from this curse?
I heard His crazy words of love
I'll never get them out of my ear.

It's only been 6 hours and then we lower Him
Into the dark and fear.

As cold as ice we toss the dice
We waive the price
Because it's paid in full.

He asked his father to forgive us
But the dirty work is all around
The wrath of God will fall upon me now.

It's only been 6 hours - He shouldn't be dead - He shouldn't be dead -
He shouldn't be dead He shouldn't be dead - He shouldn't be dead
He shouldn't - He couldn't be dead.

FROM WHERE THE SUN NOW STANDS (sung by John, on Saturday)

Close the door - I am hiding here
(Thought I was dreaming - the wind was screaming)
While I was gone all the vultures came
And stole away our plans.

Close the window - thought I heard a voice
(The sky was shifting - while I was drifting)
It see that it will always be the same
From where the sun now stands.

"Turn away, turn away,"
Thought I heard somebody say,
As drops of life fell from Your hands
Silver light running over You
From where the sun now stands.

Pull the shades - it has dawned on me
(The day was blinding - it kept reminding)
It seemed that each and every face and name
was pouring through Your glands.

"Turn away, turn away"
Thought I heard somebody say
"They let the truth fall from their hands"
Silver tears running over You
From where the sun now stands
From where the sun now stands.

Everybody weeps and nobody sleeps
Or knows why or what they have come here for
Everybody seeks for the One that speaks
The words that will float the boat once more.

Open the door - I am leaving now
(the wind is crisper - down to a whisper)
We'll labor on to keep the soul aflame
From where the sun now stands.

"Turn away, turn away"
You were overheard to say
Don't let the truth fall from our hands
Silver light running over You
From where the sun now stands
From where the sun now stands
From where the sun now stands
The sun now stands - the sun now stands - Oooo.

YESTERDAY'S DREAM (sung by mother Mary on Saturday)

I heard Him speak through the dark yesterday
And so, my Son, and so it was, it seemed
And "It is finished" is what He did say
And so, my Son, and so it was,
It was in yesterday's dream.

I heard one speak many years ago
And so, my Son, and so it was, it seemed
He said a sword would pierce me so,
And so, my Son, and so it did,
It did in yesterday's dream.

Every tree in the forest - every fish in the stream
Every stripe in the rainbow is colored
With yesterday's dream

On each bended knee of a magi king
And so, my Son, and so it was, it seemed
And each silent beat of an angel's wing
And so, my Son, and so it was,
It was in yesterday's dream.

My Joseph passed on with this thought in his mind
And so, my Son, and so it was, it seemed
"My Lord reached below me to His womankind"
Aand so, My son, and so He did
He did in yesterday's dream

Every song in the heavens - every star in between
Every clouded horizon pulsating
With yesterday's dream

And so, my Son ...

Even so, my Son - I will know my Son again
But do you go, My Son,
When the angel said You were the one to redeem?
And so, my Son, You were, my Son,
And You are in yesterday's dream.

LONG TO UNDERSTAND (sung by the angel on the stone)

Birds - singing in the face of dawn
I worship as I hear their song
Each note is like a name of God
No - nothing in the heaven above
Prepared me for the price of love
So bravely He has born the rod.

But me - I'm sitting, resting,
Waiting for my next command
Listening, hearing, knowing this had been the plan
But now I long to understand.

Joy - I see it in the Son of Man
I see Him looking at His hands
He's lifting up His voice in praise
Now - just as in the ages past
His voice is somehow small, and vast
The Lamb is the Ancient of Days.

But me - I'm sitting, resting
Waiting for my next command
Listening, hearing - I've known Him since the world began
And now I long to undertsand.

I am the angel that rolled the stone today
And as I sit I see the sun drive the mist away.

Just think - 3 days ago our legions came
We would consume them with our flame
But forgive them was His only command
And now - as my hand is resting on my knee
I see what prophets long to see
And now I feel the urge to stand.

But still - I'm sitting, resting,
Waiting for my next command
Listening, hearing -
The chirping of the birds has stilled
The silence has an urgent thrill
I know that this had been the plan
But still I long to understand
You know I long to understand.

WHAT ARE THE WORDS? (sung by Peter running to the tomb)

Night before last I was wearing my mask
I have several that I wear around
But someone threw a rock through my looking glass since then
What's that they say at the break of day
While I was contemplating fishing nets
The women saying something 'bout an empty tomb.
In my mind I'm still denying Him
And now you tell me I might face those eyes again.

What are the words? - I used to have so many
They are like birds - they scatter when it's windy
What are the words? - the ones I used to say.

It's been a long time since I ran like this
I'm not as young as I used to be
I'm slipping and sliding down the road in my fisherman's shoes.
I gotta be brave when I get to the grave
(It's like looking for raindrops our on the sea)
Please give me something that I can't deny.
I came looking for a guarantee
And empty tomb is just another mystery.

What are the words? - He used to have the right ones
I'm on the verge - I'm almost in the bright sun
What are the words? - So I'll have something to pray.

I see the change in John's eyes
I see him taking it in
He doesn't have the need to ask why
He was with Him 'til the end.

I know the words - the ones that put me on trial
What are the words - to wipe away my denial?
What are the words? - I need to hear them from Him.

GOTTA KNOW (sung by Mary Magdelene to the "gardner")

Day brings a cavern sky
It empties into dark
The vastness just a drop inside my heart.
I am just a lowly maid
Abraham's little castaway
I was told he would rejoice to see this day.

Sir, I gotta know from you
I gotta know from you
Please, won't you give me some news
I just came down here lookin' for clues
Can't you tell that my heart is true?
Sir, I gotta know - I gotta know from you.

Healing in my wretched heart
Peace within my soul
Ever since forgiveness took control.
But now my candle's in the wind
The flame is burning low
I'll try to warm the darkness while there's still a glow

Sir, I gotta know from you
Please, before the game is through
I need a word with you
Can't you see what I'm going through?
You can tell me 'cause my heart is true.
Sir, I gotta know - I gotta know from you.

All my life I've been asking questions
Questions just like this
He's the one who brought the answers
Right out of the mist. Oh, sir ......

Sir, I gotta know from you
You're standing there in the morning dew
I got a question for you
I got a feeling that I can trust you
Please, won't you give me some news
I just came down here looking for clues
You can tell me 'cause my heart is true
Sir, I gotta know, I gotta know from you.

THE BALLAD OF EMMAUSTOWN (sung by the Emmaus disciples)

As I and my good comrade, three-score furlongs to tread
In great perplexity of mind discussed our fear and dread
A man drew nigh unto us, and asked where we be bound
Supposing him a stranger I replied, "Emmaustown."

Said he, "Why are you saddened? Pray tell of what you speak."
Said I, "How come you not to know that actions of this week?"
"We'd hoped this man of Galilee would be the promised One
"to save and redeem Israel and free Jerusalem."

"And this great prophet, this man of God, both strong in word and deed,
"Our chief priest Him has crucified and the days since then are three.
"And certain women did amaze us, an empty tomb did find,
"And angels did appear to them, quoth they,'"He is alive.'"

Then said the stranger unto us, "Oh, slow of heart and fools,
"The Christ must needs have suffered this, His kingdom then to rule."
And expounded He to us the prophets, His words our hearts did mend,
And said we to Him, "Come abide with us, for the day is at an end."

And it came to pass as we sat and supped, He did break bread and pray,
And our eyes were opened and we knew Him, but He vanished away.
And so He who had been crucified, whose body was laid down,
"Twas He who burned our hearts with truth, 'twas in Emmaustown.

SOMETHING TO TOUCH (sung by Thomas)

So what have you seen that's got you believin'?
I'm not gonna glean an ounce of hope from you.
It's too much like a dream - can't put my fiinger on it.
I'm not asking much - just somethin' to touch.

He said we should follow - He said we knew the way
But I'm not gonna move until I get the OK
It's too much to ask me - it 's too late in the day
I'm not asking much - just something to touch.

And what was the purpose of getting caught in that trap?
And what of the cross, the nails and spear, and all that?
well, I've had enough of this idle chat
I'm not asking much - Just somethin' to touch.
It's not asking much - to get somethin' to touch.

Let's clear the air - today is number three
And I don't have a hope - I can't find it in me
I got two good eyes - I need a guarantee.
I'm not asking much - just somethin' to touch
Not askin' much - I need something to touch
Ya know I need it so much - I need somethin' to touch.

CALM THE WIND (THIS TIME)
(sung by Nicodemus, as he thinks on the time he met w/ Jesus in secret; also pondering the future problems of the Pharisees))

By the fire they lie - scattered like the leaves
Sleeping lightly on the the dusty ground
Among the weak and the poor
I have come tonight - I keep my wisdom up my sleeve
But now my wisdom is slipping away
Every minute losing more.

They may say there's a price to pay
They may call it a crime
But how're they gonna calm the wind on the sea
This time?

He is blinding me - I am reaching in the light
Can't see where He's coming from
But he's walking through my soul.
Every word He speaks is filling in the blanks
I've been lost in the law so long
Every scent had gotten cold.

How they gonna take the wine from the water?
How will they lead the blind?
And how're they gonna calm the wind on the sea
This time - this time?

Foxes may have their dens
The Son of Man's got the blue frost on the ground.

Yes, I felt the wind - couldn't see it come or go
As I left the fire that night
I knew something would have have to give
Now many days have passed - I hear the whispers in the street
Word is goin' 'round this dying town -
All that's left is a burial gown - a burial gown.

How they gonna cast out the Spirit now?
How did they get in this bind?
And how they gonna keep the thirsty in line
After they've tasted the new wine?
And how they gonna calm the wind on the sea - this time?
This time - this time?

EPILOG (Jesus speaks to each singer)

Consider them well, these voices you've heard
As darkness gives way to light
Though clouded by despair and fear
These voices may quicken your sight.

Each character, like others you've heard,
Speaks from a point of view.
I'll speak to each of them in turn
That they might speak to you.

Barrabas and those who hold freedom so dear
Be sure you count the cost
When freedom becomes your only goal
Your liberty may be lost.

And soldiers, 'twas you that lifted me up
And in fear your hearts did melt
For there at the cross and later the tomb
You discerned with whom you dealt.

And Pilate's wife, you saw in your dream
More than all the Pharisees
For they've left their first love, forgotten My name,
And they cannot see the forest for the trees.

And, Mother, Oh, Mother, 'twill not be for you
To lay flowers on My grave
For now is your heart more laden with joy
Than when you held Me in Bethlehem's cave.

And, John, dearest John, My own true friend
And truer now you'll be
For My mother is now your own to have
To honor My memory.

My words, Oh, Peter, will wipe away
Those spoken in weakness and fear
For Peter with words you denied your Lord
But through you many millions will hear.

And, Mary, the tears that fell that day
Are now stars that brightly shine
And the rising sun has burned away
All sorrow from your mind.

And Thomas, you doubted, for you could not see
And the others did the same
But blessed are they , though seeing Me not,
Will still believe in My Name.

And Lazarus came forth from his grave
After one day more than three
Was there some reason that you were
Expecting less of me?

The End.
